Chennai has strict licensing laws when it comes to the sale of alcohol. The state Government has decreed that the only people that can sell alcohol to the public is itself, which it does via a series of liquor shops, also known as wine shops or TASMACs.

Restaurants are not allowed to serve alcohol to their guests unless it’s part of a hotel with a certain number of rooms attached. For this reason, all the bars in Chennai can only be found within the hotels. The city is dotted with small bars so you are never too far from a place to drink in the evening, but here are some of the better places.
