This time of year, while many expats from four season climates think of cool breezes and leaves turning orange and red and yellow, Sarah and I start to look forward to the annual Oktoberfest at the Hyatt Regency Chennai! Since we both come from German heritage—my father was born there—we were eager to share an evening of liquid gold and friendly gemütlichkeit at the Hyatt Regency’s Oktoberfest running now through 6 October.
When you think Oktoberfest, you think beer, so we started with a couple of Hoppers on draft and they hit the spot, refreshing and tasty! We paired our pints with the obligatory soft pretzel and a couple of delicious mustards—a Dijon and a heavily seeded Pommery. Okay, so Hopper—one of our favorites here in Chennai—comes from Belgium, but its crisp flavor and pale color took us close to the neighborhood of Germany so we felt like we were home.
Of course, Oktoberfest celebrates not only the beer, but the traditional German foods, so it was time to step up to the grill and start sampling. First off, after a plate of salads, the pork ribs, juicy and falling apart at a whisper from the fork, bathed with a glistening jus, along with braised cabbage and rot Kraut (red cabbage,) both outstanding complements.
Next, we stepped up to the array of sausages artfully being caramelized by the chef. Starting with the chicken bratwurst and ranging through chicken frankfurters and chili cheese brats, we knew we had our work cut out for us. How could we choose between so many? A dollop of the mustards and a slice of pumpernickel along with a bit of rye bread, made for an oh, so German experience.
But this year’s treat was freshly done schnitzel—breaded tenderloin—both pork and chicken! Sarah and I loved the crispy coating and the moist, delicate meats, and paired with a charming green spaetzle (thin dumplings) and roasted veggies, it made the evening a delight. Ah, and a bit of pork stew, with a melt in your mouth texture and a mellow flavor, coupled with mushrooms in a hearty, rich white sauce.
Finally, we headed for the dessert section where we got to sample Sachertorte and chocolate mousse and fruit tarts—plus, my favorite, a delicate, traditional apple cake—for a sweet conclusion to our evening of gemütlichkeit.
The Oktoberfest at the Hyatt Regency hit all the right notes for Sarah and me, from the Hoppers to the schnitzel and the Sachertorte, so don’t miss this year’s edition!
Oktoberfest 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Chennai is on until 6th October. Book your table in advance as it’s quite popular!
